Meet Kate Russell
Kate Russell is a conflict transformation specialist with more than 30 years’ experience helping leaders and teams turn tension into trust. As the founder of The Huddle, she has mediated thousands of workplace disputes and supported organisations across Australia to build psychologically safe, high-performing cultures.
Warm, wise and deeply human, Kate is known for making hard conversations feel easier. Her signature VALID model and her belief that “conflict is a gift” have reshaped how leaders approach communication, accountability and connection.
Audiences love Kate’s clarity, humour and practical insight — she leaves people feeling hopeful, empowered, and ready to lead with courage and compassion.
My Why
I am driven by a deep belief that most workplace conflict isn’t about 'bad people'—it’s about good people stuck in bad processes, unclear leadership or a culture of silence. I have seen too many talented individuals burnt out by avoidance or punitive systems that prioritise risk management over human connection.
I share my knowledge because I know that conflict, when handled with care, is actually a powerful signal that something new is trying to emerge. My mission is to give leaders the practical tools and emotional safety to replace fear with curiosity and bring the 'people-ing' back to the forefront of business. Seeing a team move from tension and judgment to genuine understanding is the best feeling in the world.

Fun facts
I am the proud artist behind a strictly limited-edition CD titled "Kate's Greatest Hits," featuring karaoke renditions of Big Spender and I Am Woman. It remains an undiscovered classic (for now).
I have an unexplained ritual that I cannot break: the left shoe always goes on first. Always. Even when buying new shoes.
Despite my apparent professional composure, I am a magnet for spills. I regularly drop food down my front. Embarrassing but true.
I possess a superpower for losing absolutely anything at any given moment (shout out to my ADHD brain). It keeps life interesting and my search-and-rescue skills sharp.
I’m a classic "extroverted introvert." While I genuinely love people and the work I do, I have a "people-ing" limit. After a big day of facilitating, I need quiet time to recharge my social battery so I can do it all again tomorrow.
How I can help
PEOPLE OVER PROCESS: Why relying on HR checklists to fix human conflict fails, and how to restore trust by prioritising the "people-ing" before the policy.
WHEN "NOTHING’S WRONG" IS THE PROBLEM: How to spot the silent culture killers, passive-aggressive behaviour, avoidance and "I'm fine, and turn them into opportunities for real connection.
THE COST OF INCIVILITY: Eye-rolling, interruptions and silence aren't just rude, they’re expensive. Learn how small behaviours create big damage and how to stop the emotional drain on your team.
FROM TENSION TO TRUST: Reframing conflict not as a failure of leadership, but as a signal that something new is trying to emerge—if you’re brave enough to listen.
PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY IN ACTION: Moving beyond the buzzword to create environments where staff are safe enough to speak up, curious enough to listen and brave enough to challenge the status quo.
